SA: Rampage of banditry ends with 18-year jail term

ADELAIDE, Feb 26 AAP - A man who went on a "rampage of banditry" has been jailed for
18 years after pleading guilty to a string of robberies and other offences in Adelaide.

In the South Australian District Court today, Judge David Smith said Mark Anthony Taylor,
44, had been in jail serving a seven-year sentence in October 2005 when he was allowed
out from a pre-release centre to go to work.

Judge Smith said Taylor never returned, instead going on a "rampage of banditry" that
continued until he was arrested by police more than two months …

QLD:Search for clues in Qld's fatal fire

QLD:Search for clues in Qld's fatal fire

BRISBANE, Aug 27 AAP - Forensic officers have returned to the burnt shell of a house
where 11 people perished to continue investigations into the cause of the blaze.

How the fire started is now the focus of the investigation after the final two bodies
were removed from the Slacks Creek house, south of Brisbane on Friday.

Hundreds of Tongan and Samoan locals kept a vigil outside the Wagensveldt Street house
until all bodies were recovered out of respect for the dead, who were of Pacific Island
heritage.

The blaze tore through the house in the early hours of Wednesday morning, killing three
women - matriarch Fusi Kalau Taufa, 57, her sister Teukisia Lale, 42, and Fusi's daughter
Annamaria Taufa, 23.

It also killed eight children. They were Teukisia's five children - Jerry, 18, Paul,
17, Lafoa'i, 14, Sela, 10, and Richie, eight - Annamaria's daughters - Lahaina, seven,
and Kalahnie, three - and Fusi's other granddaughter Ardelle Lee, 16.

Only three men survived the blaze - patriarch and Fusi's husband Tau Taufa, 66, Teukisia's
husband Jeremiah Lale, 50, and Annamaria's partner Misi Matauina, 22.

Police say the fire appears to have started in a downstairs office and quickly engulfed
the high-set house.

Forensic officers returned to the scene of the house on Saturday to sift through the
debris for clues.

They say the complexity of the fire has made it a difficult and slow process, but have
dismissed reports the fire may have been deliberately lit.

Meanwhile, a Polynesian festival at Logan City near the scene of the fire is expected
to go ahead as planned on Saturday afternoon.

Event manager Lee Hemi told ABC Radio he wanted to call it off because the secretary
of the festival, Treicee Taufa, lost her daughter in the fire.

But he said Ms Taufa insisted it go ahead.

"Treicee Taufa ... she's the secretary and has been on board for the last two years,
she tragically lost her daughter and family members in the fire," he said.

"So she has wanted this event to go forward, so that is why we are continuing with
it, and we are hoping on the day that people can come and bring a bit of normality back
into the community and make them forget about the tragedy, even if it is only for a couple
of hours."

Police are yet to fully interview the survivors and witnesses.

Family are waiting to hear from police, who have the difficult job of distinguishing
the remains before funeral arrangements can be made.

Church services in Logan City also continued to pay tribute to the family at the weekend.

Go Daddy Launches Premium DNS Service
Type: News

Go Daddy, a provider of services that enable individuals and businesses to establish, maintain and evolve an online presence, announced the introduction of its Premium DNS service.

According to Go Daddy, there are more than 200 million registered domain names that comprise the Internet, all of them running through DNS - a critical process which matches meaningful domain names with the numerical IP identifiers to locate that website on a particular server. Go Daddy's Premium DNS provides users with tools to enhance and protect that process.
Through Go Daddy's global Anycast (DNS routing) network, Premium DNS offers more secure DNS resolution. Traffic is balanced across multiple Go Daddy data centers throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, to eliminate a single point of failure and to route DNS activities for maximized performance.

"Go Daddy customers not only take pride in their online presence, but many also depend on it for their business," said Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons. "With the customization tools we provide through Premium DNS, customers can tailor their DNS functionality."

Premium DNS users enjoy options such as creating a vanity name and custom DNS Zone templates for their domain name's server, as well as adding multiple users to one account. Customers have the option to perform bulk imports, exports and updates to multiple domain names at the same time.

Most significantly, customers are given the option to enable DNSSEC - a security tool that authenticates DNS records when an Internet user tries to visit their domain name. By assigning a specially-encrypted key to validate the DNS lookup, this tool can help prevent traffic from being diverted to a malicious computer and compromised, as part of an Internet attack.

SA:Ashes to boost SA coffers

ADELAIDE, Dec 1 AAP - South Australia will get a more than $50 million boost to its
economy from the second Ashes cricket Test starting on Friday.

Acting Premier Paul Holloway said interest in the series between Australia and England
was as high as ever with fans from interstate and overseas arriving over the next few
days.

"Apart from providing great sporting memories, hosting the Ashes Test at the Adelaide
Oval also has a significant economic impact on the state," Mr Holloway said.

In 2006 more than 136,000 spectators watched the game including 7000 interstate and
4500 international visitors.

The game pumped $52.5 million into the state's economy.

Mr Holloway said this year's game would also be the first opportunity for fans to use
the new western grandstand at Adelaide Oval that offered seating for 14,000.

"We know the Ashes Test is a great event for our state, bringing thousands of visitors
who not only enjoy the world-famous Adelaide Oval but also the city of Adelaide and our
fantastic regions," Mr Holloway said.

"Research has also shown that international visitors for previous Ashes series stayed
in South Australia for more than 10 days on average, with many of our guests visiting
the local wineries, tourist attractions and beach destinations."

Mr Holloway said national and international television coverage of the event also bolstered
the state's tourism industry, securing invaluable exposure for Adelaide around the world.

Qld: Govt rejects car rego review

BRISBANE, Dec 11 AAP - The Queensland government has rejected a petition signed by
more than 100,000 people to review a move to jack up car registration.

Deputy Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg tabled in parliament a petition calling
for the review of the rego hike, which petitioners said would especially affect pensioners
in rural areas.

In her response released on Friday, Transport Minister Rachel Nolan defended the rise,
which took effect from July 1 this year.

"This increase was necessary to keep us on track with the Bligh government's road building
program," Ms Nolan said.

"Without the increase, there may have been a need to cut back on the roads program,
which could have resulted in an increase in unemployment."

She said the estimated $1.2 billion in rego fees for 2009/10 would not cover the total
cost of the $2.1 billion roads program.

Registration fees rose 16.5 per cent for a four-cylinder vehicle and 20 per cent for
six- and eight-cylinder vehicles.

SYDNEY, Aug 3 AAP - A 23-month-old girl has been killed after being run over by a car
in the driveway of a northwest NSW home, police say.

A 32-year-old man was reversing his Holden Commodore out of a driveway in Bourke at
9.30am (AEST) on Monday when the accident happened.

Police said the driver of the car stopped and gave first aid to the toddler.

She was taken to Bourke Hospital but died shortly afterwards.

"She had sustained significant head injuries," a police statement said.

"A post-mortem examination will be conducted in coming days to determine a cause of death."

Police seized the car at the property in Meek Street for forensic examination.

Detectives interviewed the driver of the car but released him without charge pending
further inquiries.

Police said they could not confirm if the driver and the girl were related.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

SYDNEY, April 16 AAP - The Nine Network will ask a judge to throw out a breach of contract
case brought by reporter Christine Spiteri.

In the Federal Court in Sydney today, Justice Richard Edmonds set Nine's application
down for hearing on May 23.

Ms Spiteri, 40, is seeking damages of more than $500,000 under the Trade Practices
Act after she was told her contract with the network would expire in March this year.

In her statement of claim, she says she was racially and sexually discriminated against.

She alleged Nine's news director John Westacott told her: "You should work for SBS,
you certainly have the name for it."

She also alleged Mr Westacott told female journalists "to make it in this industry,
you gotta have f***ability. To make it in this game, women have to be f***able".

NSW: PM to have blood on his hands if mining laws changed: union

AAP General News (Australia)

NSW: PM to have blood on his hands if mining laws changed: union

By Adam Bennett

SYDNEY, Dec 29 AAP - The union representing the country's mining workers says Prime
Minister John Howard will have "blood on his hands" if he succeeds in his attempts to
modify mine safety laws.

Mr Howard yesterday called for an overhaul of mining industry regulations, including
spreading the liability for mine accidents, speeding up the approval of new projects through
a "one-stop shop" and quicker resolution of Aboriginal heritage issues.

Mr Howard said he had written to state and territory leaders asking them to consider
three "sensible" changes to Australia's mining and energy export industry.

In particular, Mr Howard wants the states to change occupational health and safety
requirements so responsibility for mine accidents are not focused solely on mine managers,
as he says is presently the case in some jurisdictions.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) president Tony Maher says Mr
Howard's claim that mine managers are solely responsible for accidents is false, and that
any changes would lower safety standards.

"What Howard says in his letter is wholly false," Mr Maher said today.

"The legal liability does not solely rest on mine managers.

"The legal liability is placed on all employees, and employers in the industry.

"That's proven by the fact that companies are prosecuted, managers are prosecuted,
those lower in management ranks have been prosecuted, and ordinary rank and file mine
workers have been prosecuted.

"It's all well and good to put your arms around the Beaconsfield survivors, and shed
crocodile tears about mine safety.

"But the laws that we have around the country have been built on the backs of the deaths
of over 4,000 Australians.

"There'll be lower standards if they are changed. Basically he'll have blood on his
hands. More people will die. More people will be injured."

While Mr Howard has called on the states to change their respective safety laws, Mr
Maher said the Howard government could use federal powers to overturn state laws, as happened
earlier this year with industrial relations legislation.

"Legally they've probably got the power to override the states, that's what the High
Court said in respect of the industrial laws," he said.

"Safety laws are the next cab off the rank if the Howard government is re-elected."

NSW Mineral Resources Minister Ian Macdonald said the issue of criminal liability for
mine managers was currently being examined by former Supreme Court judge Paul Stein, under
a review of workplace safety laws.

Mr Stein is due to make his recommendations in April, and the government would not
"rush to pre-empt his findings", Mr Macdonald said.

However, there was "no crisis requiring a risky fix in NSW at this time", he added.

"The NSW government has been implementing a comprehensive change program since 1998
to improve the safety of the state's mining workforce," Mr Macdonald said.

"We will continue to work to ensure the highest standards of safety for all employees
in our mining industry."

Tas: Red Cross defends donor policy as blood supplies dwindle

Tas: Red Cross defends donor policy as blood supplies dwindle

HOBART, Aug 21 AAP - The Red Cross Blood Service will defend its donor-screening policies
in the Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Tribunal today as blood supplies reach dangerously
low levels across the nation.

Tasmanian man Michael Cain claims the service's donor policy discriminates against gay men.

Mr Cain launched the challenge last year after he was told he could not donate blood
because he'd had male-to-male sex in the previous 12 months.

The 23-year-old assembly worker said last month the policy should consider whether
people had safe sex, rather than their sexual preferences.

The move comes just one day after the blood service made an urgent call for donors
as supplies nationally reached dangerously low levels.

Spokeswoman Bonita Mersiades said yesterday the service had only a day and a half of
supplies left.

Ms Mersiades said only three per cent of Australians had given blood in the past 12 months.

"Even if we increased the three per cent to five per cent, and those people all gave
blood three times a year we would be fine," she said.

Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesman Rodney Croome said Mr Cain's challenge
could have international implications for gay donors.

Only Italy and Spain allow gay men who have safe sex to donate blood, but donor policies
are currently being questioned in Britain and the United States.

"The Tasmanian tribunal hearings will be watched carefully by governments and health
experts the world over," Mr Croome said.

Today's hearing will set timetables and establish key information to be obtained for
future hearings.

Substantive issues would not be addressed, Mr Croome said.

The dogs of war.(FOREIGNPOLICY.com)(Brief article)

EAT YOUR HEARTS out, LOLcats. FP'S way dogs are the hottest viral hit on the Internet right now. A year and a half ago, ForeignPolicy.com deputy managing editor Rebecca Frankel began a weekly column on Tom Ricks's Best Defense blog, covering the surprisingly eventful world of canines in combat zones. The column soon became one of the blog's most popular features--Ricks dubbed Frankel Best Defense's "chief canine correspondent"--and everyone from breeders to troops on deployment in Iraq wrote in to suggest topics for future posts.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

But that was nothing compared with the surge of interest after it was revealed that one brave dog named Cairo had accompanied Navy SEALS on the raid the killed Osama bin Laden. Frankel quickly pulled together a memorable photo essay on war dogs, featuring the unforgettable image of a German shepherd leaping fearlessly from a helicopter. It soon became FP's most popular feature of all time, and Frankel's work has since been highlighted everywhere from the New York Times to ABC News.

Technology fosters independence.(DESIGN solutions)

Until recent times, people with high-level spinal-cord injury or disorder (SCI/D) and limited mobility may have been very dependent on family members or caregivers to perform a variety of basic daily functions. They may not have been able to do simple things like operating television controls, answering telephone calls, having computer and Internet access, selecting music, or controlling room temperature or lighting. The same may have been true of those being treated in an SCI/D Acute Care or Long Term Care unit where they likely depended on staff and visitors to assist them.

This extreme change in life condition for a person with SCI/D can lead to lower self-esteem and a sense of helplessness. This is often due to depending on others for many activities they effortlessly once did and that most people take for granted.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Assistance with Daily Living

The environmental control unit (ECU) was invented to help people with limited mobility control basic daily functions with touch, voice, eye, or other body movements. An ECU is a small electronic device with wireless and infrared capabilities and multiple ports that allows users to connect with many electronic devices such as DVD players, televisions, appliances, computers, lighting, and much more.

Over the last few decades, the ECU changed as technology evolved. In 1983, Michael Rourke invented the first voice-activated ECU for his mother, who had multiple sclerosis (MS). Today, ECU technology has developed to allow individuals in their private residences, hospital rooms, or long-term-care settings to experience a greater sense of independence and self-esteem. The new technology allows for much greater control over the environment without the constant need for a family member, caregiver, or hospital staff to attend to them.

The latest technology allows people to operate the ECU and its functions through touch screen, voice, eye, head, tactile, and Sip N' Puff methods. Sip N' Puff technology allows an individual with tetraplegia to control the ECU by placing a plastic tube in his/her mouth. Commands are based upon the quantity of air blown or inhaled into the tube; this has worked well for many people.

Product Examples

One company offers an ECU product that received EDA approval (for medical devices) and says it is the only company with such approval in the marketplace. The firm custom builds its ECUs to meet users' unique requirements. This ECU can control a computer, Internet access, VCR, DVD, CD player, television, phone, and stereo tuner. In addition to these common functions, the unit can connect to a satellite dish, open and close doors and windows, adjust the thermostat, turn lamps on and off, and even [urn book pages. The technology can connect up to (54 appliances and 64 lights in a house with one ECU and can be switch activated, voice activated, or accessed via remote control, and has a voice-controlled mouse/keyboard option.

Another company has developed technology mat allows users to control functions with eye movement, otherwise referred to as "eye gaze." This ECU can remotely control doors, lights, blinds, television, music, nurse call, and even the humidifier. In the hospital setting, the individual can use this technology to control the use of the public elevator by allowing remote operation of the elevator call button in the corridor and the control buttons within the elevator cab. Additionally, the ECU is able to control many functions within patients' rooms.

The Memphis VA Medical Center SCI/D unit staff is proposing to order state-of-the-art ECUs for all its beds. In addition to the typical functions previously mentioned, this system offers upgraded software features such as screen games, book-reading software, and "phrase talker " for verbally challenged patients so they can communicate their needs to staff and family. These ECUs come with built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a large memory, high-resolution multi-angle touch screen, high-output speakers, and a long battery life.

Designers of new residential projects or renovations, as well as SCI/D hospital and long-term-care facilities, should provide the infrastructure, specify appliances, and select electronic devices compatible with the ECUs available in the marketplace. Appropriate family members, caregivers, or hospital staff should be trained in the operation of the ECUs in the event problems occur with the devices.

Veterans with SCI/D may have the option of obtaining an ECU at little or no cost through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). For people who don't qualify for VA financial assistance, other programs may be available and vary from state to state.

Do Your Homework!

Before purchasing an ECU, ask these questions:

Does the manufacturer specialize in ECUs?

Does the unit have flexibility in the types of control and activation?

Is it a stand-alone or computer-based system (a computer-based system could crash)?

Is the ECU flexible enough to be modified and tailored to individual needs?

Does it have remote capabilities?

Is the hierarchy of commands simple and user-friendly?

Are all the functions built-in or does it require many plug-ins?

Does the ECU control the computer and not the opposite (the mouse and keyboard should be operated separate from the PC)?

Is the ECU easy to install?

Is there battery back-up in the event of a power outage?

Does the manufacturer offer excellent service and support?

Technological advances in ECUs have been extraordinary during the last few decades. This should continue well into the future as new technologies become available, leading to even greater independence for individuals with SCI/D.

It is advisable to research several different manufacturers of ECUs before selecting one to make sure the companies provide the functionality, support, and service you require. And, as with all new technology, the price should become more affordable over time.

Education has experienced many changes in recent years, with the most significant being that today's high school students learn much differently than students did just ten years ago," Dr. Henson observed. "They have never known a world without computers or the internet so they are skilled at continuous interaction with technology, and can benefit from an education that utilizes stimulating virtual curriculum designed specifically for them."

"She is a unique professional educator, with a vast knowledge of learning from middle school through college, and she will add tremendous value and quality to the education experience our students receive."

Dr. Henson, a resident of Jasper, Georgia, began her career as an English teacher in the Gwinnett County (GA) School District; she went on to work as a teacher and administrator in North Carolina, Florida, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and California, holding a series of progressively responsible positions, including department chair, dean of curriculum and instruction, principal, and regional director. A consultant to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and a trainer and mentor for The New Teacher Project, Dr. Henson most recently provided a wide range of educational consulting services to traditional, charter and virtual schools.

A graduate of Western Carolina University, Dr. Henson also holds a M.A. degree in School Administration from Seton Hall University, an Ed.D. degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, and is a graduate from the Principals Executive Program of the James B. Hunt Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of North Carolina. In 2000, Dr. Henson attained certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

A stimulating experience: residents will warm up to new technology that tickles their brains.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

When it comes to computers and electronic equipment of any kind, the term "user friendly" takes on a new meaning when senior citizens are involved. Those baby boomer parents in their 70s, 80s and older lived in a largely manual world, despite witnessing many advancements in automation technology.

As a result, many seniors are intimidated by anything computer-oriented and are reluctant to learn anything about electronic devices, in spite of the benefits they may offer. Research from Jackson, MS-based American HealthTech bears this out as 41% of surveyed seniors between the ages of 70 and 75 said they either don't use or are uncomfortable with using a personal computer. That number grows to 63% for those over age 75.

Yet the same study showed that 96% of these seniors were comfortable using home entertainment systems like their television--which flicked on the idea light bulb for American HealthTech CEO Bill Caldwell: If seniors know their way around a TV remote, why not let the remote control more than TV programs?

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

The result is MyCommunityConnection, a suite of seven online services designed to promote seniors' health, well-being and independence. Because the system requires only a television and an Internet connection, there is no need for a PC--just a simple set-top box. And for users who are a little more tech-savvy, there is an option of accessing the service through a standard Internet browser on a PC.

"The only thing special about the remote control is that it's more senior-friendly than most," Caldwell said. "It's a universal remote that can be used to control nearly any TV, VCR or DVD player in addition to the set top box that connects MyCommunityConnection to the Internet. The remote we've selected does have larger and more readable buttons and numbers, and it glows in the dark for better visibility in poor lighting."

The finished product evolved considerably from the original 2004 concept, which designers called an "interactive bulletin board." Caldwell explained that the core idea was to place a touch-screen monitor in a resident's room that would allow an unobtrusive way for them to check in daily, to receive timed medication reminders and to interact with community services and activities.

"We had the concept right, but the deployment needed work," he said. "So we set about finding an even friendlier and more affordable vehicle to integrate the concept right into the life flow of the residents. Our research led us to a unique method of delivering the solution over the resident's television set and using a simple TV remote control as the 'keyboard.' And by utilizing a simple, low-cost set top box rather than a computer, the financial barrier to adoption was eliminated and MyCommunityConnection was on its way to market."

'NANA' TECHNOLOGY

Launched at last fall's American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging's (now LeadingAge's) annual meeting and exposition, MyCommunityConnection generated excitement among attendees. Andrew Carle, director of George Mason University's senior living administration management track and self-ascribed "Nana" technology advocate, understands why.

"The tenets of 'Nana' technology are that it should either be able to improve quality of life for seniors without the need of human assistance, or make the human assistance they do require more efficient and productive," he said. "This technology has the potential to do both. It represents an excellent application of 'Nana' technology by providing access to the electronic communication world for those otherwise unable to do so. It also can address what we know to be among the largest drivers of resident complaints--lack of communication." MyCommunityConnection addresses the communication issue by offering nine key functions: a pop-up daily check in service, automated community service requests, interactive community and personalized calendars with reminders, daily menu selection, social networking with other residents, pictorial directories of fellow residents with interest profiles, pictorial staff directories and outside service directories, wellness tracking with interactive medication management and a resident survey tool.

"The system offers a full gamut of services under a single umbrella, making it more of a comprehensive 'life portal' rather than a single-purpose offering," Caldwell said. "Many of those who saw this value at [LeadingAge] went on to elaborate about how the umbrella might later provide a softer front end for a variety of other specialty software and devices on the market."

Carle says the system also has "value-added" potential on the community side to both reduce costs through increased efficiency and by providing a marketing advantage.

"The one concern I have, though, is the storing of medical and personal information on a central server and the threat of the information on that server being compromised," he said. "But overall, I like the looks of it."

System users need not worry about their personal information being at risk, Caldwell assured.

SEATTLE, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ --Knight Ridder New Media today announced a partnership with Alki Software Corporation to launch Babynamer.com on the World Wide Web and jointly develop next-generation newsroom technologies.

"We're proud to introduce Babynamer to our online customers," said Ken Doctor, vice president/editorial of Knight Ridder New Media. "It's a leading-edge product, one that uses Web capabilities to go beyond what the dozens of baby-naming books can do. It serves an important and potentially lucrative niche -- expectant parents and those who care about them -- in a way that is both editorially rich and innovative in its business model."

"Mercury Center and other Knight Ridder sites are pointing the way toward the future," said Peter Rinearson, president of Alki Software Corporation. "Knight Ridder demonstrates its vision, leadership and flexibility every day, and it has an admirable tradition of journalistic excellence. We're eager to work with the people of Knight Ridder."

The next-generation newsroom technologies initiative is a joint research-and-development project that will incorporate InType technology from Alki. It will move Knight Ridder toward the goal of creating a single digital publishing system that drives all print and electronic publications.

Babynamer.com, the first Alki Web application to go public, is the world's most comprehensive source of information about names and their implications. "It is a unique addition to our Real Cities network," Doctor said.

It offers well-researched insights on the origin, meaning, and changing worldwide popularity of more than 18,000 names. It contains essays by thousands of people about what it was like to grow up with their first names; reviews of names by a multi-racial panel; lists of teasing nicknames, and mini-biographies on more than 40,000 namesakes.

Babynamer.com also offers audio pronunciations of thousands of names, and lets users rate and comment on names. It includes more than 2,000 lists of names, and offers rich, interesting ways to search for the perfect name.

A forthcoming version will add significant editorial, advertising, and technical enhancements designed to extend and enrich the interaction between the consumers and advertisers who use Babynamer.com.

Knight Ridder and Alki announced their partnership at Interactive Newspapers '98 in Seattle, a conference sponsored by Editor & Publisher magazine.

Knight Ridder New Media, located in San Jose, Calif., is a division of Knight Ridder. Real Cities is Knight Ridder's national online network consisting of 33 Web sites and Internet products. Knight Ridder is the nation's second largest newspaper publisher, with products in print and online. The company publishes 32 daily newspapers in 34 U.S. markets, reaching 9.3 million readers daily and 12.9 million on Sunday. Knight Ridder has investments in two newsprint mills and is headquartered in Miami, Florida.

Alki Software Corporation was founded in Seattle in 1988 in the belief that a little-used word processor, Microsoft Word, would someday be the world's leading productivity application. Alki remains a major producer of enhancements to Word and Office. In 1995, Alki began developing Babynamer.com and the InType Web-applications platform. Today, Alki develops vertical applications for distribution on newspaper and other media Web sites. Samsung SGH-i600.(product evaluation)(Product/service evaluation)

Byline: Emil Larsen

Samsung SGH-i600

Outstanding mobile broadband, but is the screen too small?

Bluetooth, 802.11g Wifi and 1.8Mbits/sec HSDPA are all big-hitting features on SamsungA-s business phone, the SGH-i600, and everything fits into a package weighing just 105g. The HSDPA reverts to 3G for data transfers in poor coverage areas, but it means youA-ll almost always be within range of a reliable internet connection with this phone.

Windows Mobile 5 runs the show, allowing easy viewing of Word, Powerpoint, Excel and PDF documents. ThereA-s a heavy emphasis on media when you first start the phone up, but this isnA-t followed through by Samsung which only provides a proprietary headset connector and no 3.5mm jack.

The internals include 64MB of Ram and 128MB of internal storage, which can be increased using the Micro-SD card slot.

A 1.3-megapixel camera at the rear lets you take impromptu photos, while the 0.3-megapixel camera on the front is for videoconferencing.

Despite being clear and vivid, surfing the web isnA-t a particularly pleasurable experience on a 2.3in screen. Indeed, the small screen puts some of the mobile broadband functionality to waste, since itA-s not big enough to browse most standard sites. A better use of the SGH-i600A-s high-speed connection is perhaps to hook it up to a notebook with a bigger screen.

Samsung provides two batteries, quoting 300 hours standby time and 6.5 hours talk time for the standard battery. Using the extended battery adds a bit of bulk, but it only lost half its charge after a whole weekend of usage, including a full day with the Wifi turned on a a truly exceptional feat.

Audio quality for calls was fine and the keyboard is one of the best Qwerty models available, making the SGHi600 a well made, feature-rich phone. Emil Larsen

American Business Bank Celebrates the Beginning of Its Seventh Year in Business.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- American Business Bank (BULLETIN BOARD: AMBZ) , a Los Angeles based independently owned bank that provides financial services to businesses in the "middle market," celebrated the beginning of its seventh year in business on October 1.

Founded in 1998 by five former executives from Mellon 1st Business Bank, American Business Bank has gone from $14.2 million to over $440 million in assets. Of the other 15 California banks opened in 1998, most had not reached $200 million in assets at the beginning of 2004. Moreover, of the 11 California banks with assets in the $400 million range, the average institutional age exceeds 21 years.

American Business Bank recently reported net earnings for the third quarter of $901,000, or $0.45 per share, a 78% increase from earnings for the same period a year ago. In addition, year-to-date earnings have now exceeded $2.1 million, a 60% increase over the first 9 months of 2003.

These financial milestones have resulted in American Business Bank being ranked the 93rd largest bank in California and the 24th largest bank in Los Angeles County. As part of its ongoing growth strategy, the bank opened new offices in Orange County and the San Fernando Valley.

In 1997, when 1st Business Bank was purchased by Mellon Bank, a group of five senior executives realized that the numerous banking consolidations resulted in fewer locally based business banks to serve the burgeoning small and mid-sized company market. These executives founded and personally raised more than $14.2 million to capitalize American Business Bank. This was the largest management driven bank capitalization in California history at that time.

Since inception, American Business Bank's vision has been to provide superior personal services to privately owned companies with revenues in the $5 million to $150 million range.

The approach is old fashioned, unique for today, but proven successful. American Business Bank is founded on four basic principals: Personal Attention, Stability, Recruitment of Top Employees and Knowledge.

"As we begin our seventh year in business, we have many accomplishments to celebrate including; asset and deposit growth exceeding that of our peer group, a fortress balance sheet and record profitability during the largest interest rate decrease in about 40 years," stated Robert Schack, Chairman.

"We've recruited some of the most highly experienced and well compensated individuals and given them direct client relationship responsibilities. Our clients are responding and we continue to attract more companies," says Don Johnson, President.

Founded in 1998, American Business Bank offers a wide range of financial services to businesses in the middle market. Clients include wholesalers, manufacturers, service businesses, professionals and non-profit organizations. The bank is headquartered in downtown Los Angeles, with regional offices in Woodland Hills and Irvine, and can be found on the internet at http://www.americanbusinessbank.com/.

Anyka Releases MobileFlash(R) for QUALCOMM's BREW(TM) Platform; Mobile Multimedia Application Developed for BREW-Enabled Handsets.

GUANGZHOU, China -- GUANGZHOU, China, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Anyka (Guangzhou) Software Technology Co., Ltd., a leading application developer focusing on mobile multimedia development, today announced the launch of MobileFlash, a multimedia technology for QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW) platform.

"The BREW platform allows end users to enjoy a faster and more powerful performance of applications written native to BREW in C/C++. BREW also enables us to keep improving the compression ratio while maintaining and optimizing visual and audio performance," said Wan Xiang, Ph. D., general manager of Anyka. "One of the significant features of MobileFlash is its low complexity, which is important for mobile devices because their CPU has very limited resources due to power consumption. Efficient algorithms that work well in the wired world or in desktop computing may not be suitable for mobile multimedia applications. MobileFlash makes a good balance between compression ratio, complexity, and animation quality."

"MobileFlash is a great addition to the list of BREW applications being developed in China," said Jing Wang, senior vice president of QUALCOMM and chairman of QUALCOMM China. "Anyka is bringing popular, compelling content to BREW-enabled mobile devices so that users can enjoy it anytime, anywhere. We are very pleased to be working with a company dedicated to providing consumers with a new generation of mobile multimedia products."

MobileFlash is a new type of video compression/decompression format that can convert popular Macromedia Flash(TM) content to be played on mobile phones. Comparable with the current animation technology, it is designed to be thin and meet the special needs of mobile devices, supporting smaller files, lower complexity, and better multimedia effects. MobileFlash supports 16, 256, and 4096 colors and incorporates MIDI as the background music, optimizing the synchronization of animation, text and music. In addition, by providing a transcoding tool to convert AVI, MPEG and Macromedia Flash content popularly available over the Internet, MobileFlash can easily access a huge volume of pre-existing content.

The economic benefits of green IT.

_, April 07, 2011 (Pakistan Observer): During the last decade, growing concerns over the global environment and subsequent effects of climate change that is blamed on human population boom has led to the establishment of green revolution. Initially, considered more of a loose movement of environmentalists and academicians, this green revolution literally has grown into a global phenomenon that has finally involved government agencies and private industries where once-traditional operations have been infused with ecologically friendly processes, usually in the form of decreasing expulsion of greenhouse gases and waste water.

Investing in green IT But green revolution has expanded to different sectors from agriculture, manufacturing, power distribution, water resource management, traffic systems, construction, among others. These sectors have adopted green systems that are primarily for long-term sustainable development. Such adoption is no longer a way for industrialists to make environmentalists happy but it is one that should enable them to realize the cost-benefits of new, more efficient, and environment friendly processes.

Based on empirical data from academic and government sources, adoption of eco-friendly green programs could result in positive gains in a countrys economy. The United Nations Environment Program released a report in late 2010 proving that investing on green technology - that is, processes that enhance the planets natural capital : would have long-term benefits in terms of ensuring availability of natural resources for any industry, more jobs, and even more efficient industries that produce more for less raw materials.

One sector that has fully embraced green technology is the information and communications technology (ICT) industry. This sector has become the backbone of nearly all industries as it builds on the need for faster and more efficient transactions at lesser costs. In fact, an International Data Corporation study revealed that ICT investments went up to US$3 trillion in 2010. This already points to increasing demand for ICT in various businesses.

Economic concerns on ICT

With ICT having a lot of potential going for it, it is also a very resource intensive industry, consuming space and power for use in communication and data transfer. Majority of ICT investments are in businesses and most of these are located in buildings, which are the worlds primary consumers of electricity, rated at about 40 percent overall. This will not decrease especially as more companies, homes, and government rely heavily on ICT infrastructure for basically all modes of transactions.

A report in 2010 by Connection Research showed that greenhouse gas emissions from the ICT sector would increase slowly over the next decade until 2020.

Furthermore, the study showed that green ICT implementations are minimal or rudimentary at best. Surprisingly, the Connection Research report only covered the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and India, which are among the biggest consumers of ICT. This implies that companies and other institutions in these countries have yet to fully comprehend the need for green ICT.

ICT as key driver in green revolution

Despite what seems to be the ICT industrys own negative, albeit relatively minimal environmental impact and the slow process as to which major industries are implementing green ICT, there are still areas where ICT itself can still be a key tool in ensuring a sustainable green economy.

The European Commission identified several key roles where ICT can be used to achieve these goals.

For instance, smart electricity grids and metering systems improve distribution of electricity to areas where they are most needed, thus reducing wastage of power that could amount to millions if not billions of dollars. Likewise, water management systems can also be controlled using intelligent ICT systems in order to distribute just the right amount of potable water to different locations. Sewer systems can also be monitored and maintained to reduce pollution, which costs money to manage through traditional means.

Buildings, which account for nearly 40 percent of all power being used, could cut down consumption by as much as 20 percent if automatic lighting and air conditioning systems are put in place. Even the construction of new buildings can be more efficient using ICT instruments that help engineers visualize the physical infrastructure as well as lay out all the utility requirements (electricity, cable TV, Internet and telephone connections, water, etc.) from the design phase.

Businesses can also increase their efficiency using ICT technologies. SAP has invested on business application software that manage resources efficiently. Increasing productivity at only a fraction of the cost means that companies can use the savings on investing in their core business or even expand their operations.

From an economic standpoint, as stated in a study by the World Economic Forum, the impact of ICT on the economy is not direct but through the benefits gained from its utilization in various sectors. While it is taking time for many industries and governments to implement these green ICT infrastructures, researchers all agree that green ICT will not be a fad but a core aspect of all businesses. However this is done would still result in long-term sustainability not just for businesses but more importantly for the environment.: The writer is Country Head, SAP Pakistan
