The dogs of war.(FOREIGNPOLICY.com)(Brief article)

EAT YOUR HEARTS out, LOLcats. FP'S way dogs are the hottest viral hit on the Internet right now. A year and a half ago, ForeignPolicy.com deputy managing editor Rebecca Frankel began a weekly column on Tom Ricks's Best Defense blog, covering the surprisingly eventful world of canines in combat zones. The column soon became one of the blog's most popular features--Ricks dubbed Frankel Best Defense's "chief canine correspondent"--and everyone from breeders to troops on deployment in Iraq wrote in to suggest topics for future posts.

But that was nothing compared with the surge of interest after it was revealed that one brave dog named Cairo had accompanied Navy SEALS on the raid the killed Osama bin Laden. Frankel quickly pulled together a memorable photo essay on war dogs, featuring the unforgettable image of a German shepherd leaping fearlessly from a helicopter. It soon became FP's most popular feature of all time, and Frankel's work has since been highlighted everywhere from the New York Times to ABC News.
