NSW: Police in hospital after mattress fire at backpacker house

SYDNEY, Dec 12 AAP - Two police officers and a hostel guest are in hospital following
a mattress fire in Sydney's east.

Police and fire crews were called to the two-story backpacker house at Bondi Junction
about 3.30am (AEDT) after guests called Triple-O.

A mattress caught fire, forcing the evacuation of 15 people by police from the premises.

A male officer, a female officer and a male hostel guest suffered smoke inhalation
and were taken to hospital where they remain under observation.

Fire crews extinguished the mattress and guests have been allowed to return inside.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire, which may have been caused by a cigarette.
